Lady Redskins are Fast Pitch Softball District Champions

The Lady Redskins Fast Pitch softball team left no doubt they were the top team in their district last week, beating Empire handily 19-2, then beating Union City Thursday and Friday.

The Empire Lady Bulldogs were no match for the Lady Redskins in game one. With a score of 5-2 early, the Lady Redskins broke loose and scored nine runs in the third inning.  Katelyn Fox hit it over the fence in the fourth and the bases were loaded.  The Lady Bulldogs never scored again after their initial two runs.

Lillyan Ball handled pitching duties for the Lady Redskins, allowing five hits, two runs and one strike out.

Ball, Mackayla Clark, Katelyn Fox, Shelbie Caveness, Kennedi Snyder, Nicki Crabb, Kimberly Fox and Myka Brady all had multiple hits. Kate Fox, Clark and Ball each collected three hits to lead the Lady Redskins.

Game two brought the Union City Lady Tigers to town Thursday for a 6:00 o’clock game.  Caveness was the only score for the Lady Redskin in the first inning. The Lady Tiger lead off hitter wasted no time sailing one over the fence to get the game started. Union City scored once more in the first to lead the Lady Redskins 2-1.

The Lady Redskins weren’t able to score in the next inning but Union City’s DeLong hit another one over the fence and the score was 3-1.

Sophomore Shelbie Caveness was ready for her own home-run, so she opened up the third inning with just that, making the score 3-2. Kate Fox followed with a double. MacKayla Clark hit one past the third basemen for a triple and drove in Fox. Layla Miller walked on four balls. With a hit, Snyder got out at first.  Crabb walked up to bat with two outs and two on base. Crabb hit a double, driving in Clark and Miller. Brady followed with a double and brought Crabb home. Kim Fox walked and Brady stole third. Caveness was now back up to bat. With a single she brought Brady and Fox in and the score was 8-3. The third inning came to an end, which the Lady Redskins dominated.

The Lady Redskins continued to hold off the Lady Tigers in the fourth inning, playing strong defense. Brady was walked when she was up to bat . Caveness knocked Brady in when she hit one over the fence. The fourth inning ended with a 10-4 score.

Lots of defense took place between the fourth and seventh innings, with neither team scoring. The Lady Tigers weren’t going down without a fight and they made the seventh inning exciting.

With a score of 10-6, the bases were loaded for the Lady Tigers. Ball had thrown two strikes and the batter hit multiple foul balls until she hit it. A Union City runner interfered with the catching of the ball and was ruled out. That was the third out and the Lady Redskins won 10-6.

Union City went home defeated, but would be back Friday for another day to keep their hopes alive of a District Championship.

Friday was Lillyan Ball’s day though. The Lady Tigers were scoreless against Ball at the plate.  DeLong hit the ball over the fence twice on Ball the day before. But Ball was fearless as DeLong was the first up to bat and Ball struck her out.

The Lady Redskins didn’t score until the third inning. Ball singled and Paytn Tate replaced her as the runner. Kate Fox then tripled, bringing Tate home for a score. Clark followed with a fantastic pop-up which looked to be productive. A diving catch by Union City’s center-fielder was an out. The third inning ended 3-0.

Miller had the hot glove Friday, catching several flies to get the Lady Tigers out.

Ball singled in the fourth to bring Brady home for a score and the inning was over with a score of 4-0.

The Lady Redskin put a couple more points on the board in the sixth inning when Caveness knocked Brady in and ended up with another run scored.

The seventh inning was short as the Lady Redskins got two outs at first and Ball struck the third batter out.

Ball pitched seven innings in the final game, allowing three hits, no runs, walked zero and struck out six. Ball also went three for four from the plate to lead the Lady Redskins.

The Lady Redskins will travel to Canute Thursday for the Regional Tournament. They are scheduled to play Canute Thursday at noon. The winner of this game will play again at 6:00 p.m. and the loser will play at 4:00 p.m.

Good luck Lady Redskins!
